  • To celebrate the 85th anniversary of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) is excited to sponsor a global research competition in 2022: Undergraduate Student Research Competition.

  • The competition aims to showcase undergraduate students’ theoretical knowledge and research skills, as well as extend the frontier of their knowledge in hospitality, tourism, MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions), and other related fields.

  • Awardees will be invited to attend and present their study in the 5th Global Tourism and Hospitality Conference in Hong Kong on 13-14 June 2022.


  • Undergraduate students at universities with hospitality and tourism programmes around the world are qualified for the competition. While the research could be conducted under faculty supervision, the student must be the leading author.


  • 1st prize (2 submissions): HK$15,000 travel scholarship will be awarded to defray the costs for the offline attendance of the 5th Global Tourism and Hospitality Conference* 

  • 2nd prize (4 submissions**): HK$5,000 travel scholarship will be awarded to defray the costs for the offline attendance of the 5th Global Tourism and Hospitality Conference* 

  • If the students winning first and second prizes apply to the Master of Science programme of SHTM and are accepted, a full scholarship will be provided (Recipients have to maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher during their course of study).

* Depending on the COVID-19 situation around the conference date, exceptions may be considered on a case-by-case basis regarding the condition of offline attendance;

**Selection committee reserves the right to select fewer than four 2nd prize awardees, depending on the quality of submissions.

  • Submission of research paper: 27 April 2022 (11:59 pm GMT +8)

  • Awardees notified: 11 May 2022

  • Awardees registration for conference: 31 May 2022


  • A research paper in PDF format has to be submitted to Easychair  (

  • A full research paper has to be submitted, which should include title, abstract, keywords, introduction, literature review (research background), methodology, results, discussion, and conclusion.

  • Any research paper not following the guidelines below is subject to desk rejection.

    • Word limit: 9,000 words including title, abstract (up to 150 words), references, tables, and figures.

    • Font & Size: Times New Roman and 12 point.

    • Margin & Line spacing: 1-inch margin on all sides and double-spaced.

    • Fully referenced using the APA (7th).

    • ** Written in English**


  • The identities of the students will be concealed from the selection committee, and vice versa.

  • A minimum of two selection committee members will assess the quality of a research paper.

  • A submitted research paper will be judged based on the following criteria.

    • Well-defined and significant research problem.

    • Comprehensive review of literature, or logically-organized research background.

    • Sound and valid methods, and well-articulated results.

    • Insightful discussion and conclusion.
